The splendorous Caracol was the largest metropolis in the Maya lowlands of ancient times. A world in which the gods demanded rituals, ceremonies and believed that every inanimate or animate object had a spirit of its own. Time hangs in space at Caracol Deep within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, you will enjoy the flora and fauna that along with stunning scenery on the way will enhance the true beauty of this magnificent Maya centre.  We will take you along a forest trail giving you the experience of a life time as we recount the history of nobles and peasants living a mystic world. The trees and forest have taken over guarding the secrets of this place where our ancestors once gazed at the stars, plotted wars, designed and built magnificent structures, developed agricultural practices and conducted their most sacred rituals. You will visit ancient courtyards, ball courts, residential complexes and a complete astronomical observatory.   Caracol is the largest Maya archaeological site in Belize. In AD 650, the urban area of Caracol had a radius of approximately 10 kilometers around the center of the site. Caracol maintained a population of over 140,000 people through the creation of an immense agricultural field system and through elaborate city planning. Caracol is noted not only for its size during the Maya Classic era (A.D. 250-950), but also for its prowess in war; this includes an AD 562 defeat of Tikal and a subsequent conquest of Naranjo.

Leaving San Ignacio at 7:30 AM  with a 2 hours drive to Caracol, we will take you through the Maya villages of Cristo Rey and San Antonio, to one of the largest metropolis in the Maya lowlands of ancient times, the splendorous Caracol.

At Caracol we will take you along a forest trail, giving you the experience of a life time as we recount the history of nobles and peasants living a mystic world. A world in which Gods demanded rituals and ceremonies, where everything inanimate and animate had a spirit of its own. Time hangs in space at Caracol. The trees and forest have taken over guarding the secrets of this place where our ancestors once gazed at the stars and plotted wars. Here they built magnificent structure, developed agriculture practices and a network of roads, which would come to support over a 100,000 inhabitants. Situated on the Vaca Plateau at an elevation of 500 meters, Caracol was first settled in 600 B.C. Rose to an impressive metropolis by 675 A.D. and once defeated Tikal. You will walk where warriors and peasants walked, visit the most important points of interest. Climbing the mighty Canna towering 43 meters, one the largest man-made structure in Belize. From here admire the great view of the tropical forest and the space that shaped and was shaped by the Maya civilization.

After lunch we will drive back, stopping at the refreshing waters of the Rio On Pools or Big Rock falls which is like 100 ft high in the Mountain Pine Ridge where you can swim and relax Before driving back to San Ignacio.


Time: 7:30AM to 5:00PM (9 1/2 hours)
